We are pleased to announce an event accompanying the above conference: a research workshop to be run by Professor Martha Foschi, June 22 and 24. Tadeusz Sozański, Joanna Heidtman. ● Research workshop on: EXPERIMENTS ON SOCIAL STATUS, DOUBLE STANDARDS FOR COMPETENCE, AND THE ASSESSMENT OF JOB APPLICANTS Martha Foschi Professor of Sociology, Emerita University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada
This workshop will examine recent research on competence double-standards, namely, the practice of assessing performers with different requirements for ability, depending on their social status. The focus of the workshop will be on the "application-files design" for the experimental investigation of this practice. This design was initially developed to study the occurrence of gender-based double standards for competence in the assessment of junior professionals with average-performance records, said to be applying for positions in various engineering fields; subsequent studies have expanded this focus.
The workshop will include: (a) brief overview of theory and research on competence double-standards; (b) introduction of the "application-files" design; (c) review of strategies for setting up and organizing a research team, and for recruiting participants; (d) presentation and discussion of research instruments (instructions to participants; information on “applicants;” questionnaires; protocol for the post-experimental interview) and overview of research results; and (e) examination of the use of this design to study the role of additional factors in the activation of double standards (examples of such factors are variations in the applicants' level of performance, ethnic background, and self-presentation style).
The workshop is open to all interested faculty and upper-level students from sociology, psychology, and related fields. There will be two sessions, June 22 and 24, each at 4pm-6pm. Suggested Pre-reading:

Prof. Foschi, obywatelka Kanady, pochodzi Argentyny. Po studiach socjologicznych i doktoracie w Uniwersytecie Stanfordzkim (1970), podjęła pracę w Uniwersytecie Kolumbii Brytyjskiej w Vancouver, gdzie przeszła wszystkie szczeble kariery akademickiej, uzyskując w 1992 r. stanowisko równorzędne z polską profesurą tytularną. Jej zainteresowania badawcze w obrębie psychologii społecznej obejmują zjawiska statusu i wpływu interpersonalnego w grupach zadaniowych, przesądy i stereotypy związane z płcią i pochodzeniem etnicznym, procesy interpersonalne wpływające na oceny kompetencji zadaniowych. Prof. Foschi interesuje się także problematyką budowy teorii oraz metoda eksperymentalną w naukach społecznych. Sama ma ogromne doświadczenie w stosowaniu tej metody. W znakomitym przetłumaczonym niedawno podręczniku Earla Babbie to właśnie zaprojektowany przez nią eksperyment wykorzystany został jako materiał ilustracyjny.
Po przejściu na emeryturę (2002) prof. Foschi rozpoczęła kolejne badania w swoim laboratorium, uzyskawszy wsparcie finansowe kanadyjskiego odpowiednika KBN. Temat tych badań ("Assessing Job Applications: Effects from Sex Category, Self-Presentation Style, and Selection Procedures"), zorientowanych na praktyczne zastosowania, powinien zainteresować socjologów zajmujących się problematyką płci jako czynnika różnicującego szanse na rynku pracy.
Profesor Foschi dwukrotnie (1997, 2001) prowadziła kursy dla studentów w IS UJ. Wraz z prof. Szmatką współorganizowała III konferencję badaczy procesów grupowych, która odbyła się w Vancouver w sierpniu 1998. W czerwcu w Krakowie odbędzie się kolejna konferencja z tego cyklu, zorganizowana z pomocą Research Committee 42 International Sociological Association, do udziału w której również zapraszamy.
