The Student Communityl

The basic ideological assumption of the Academy of Music in Cracow involves the understanding
of an artistic-scholarly education for young students. Future adherents of music are becoming acquainted
not only with the fundamental artistic craft, but also initiated in a wide context of music and culture.
At the time Polish schools received autonomy, the student community obtained the right to decide
jointly, with the authorities, the shape, form and programme of studies. The effect of discussions and
close collaboration of educationists and students has been a general change in the models of education
(the division of subjects into obligatory and optional) and also the introduction
of a credit system in the faculties of Composition, Conducting and Music Theory. The Instrumental
faculty carried out essential modification to the structures of the Academy orchestra, dividing into smaller
ensembles, working parallel under various concert programmes. Since the start of the new academic year
in the Cracow Academy the following student ensembles have been running:

- Choir - leadership: Stanislaw Krawczynski and Lidia Matynian-Halon;
- 3 Orchestras, which collectively form the large Academy Symphony Orchestra.

The Academy has been the source of "Sinfonietta Cracovia" - the Chamber Orchestra
of the Royal-Metropolitan City of Cracow, under the artistic leadership of Robert Kabara, its first violinist.
The Academy has also its student orchestra "Sinfonietta", headed by Piotr Sulkowski.
Two string quartets are connected with the academic community: "Cracovia" and "DAFO".
Significant events, not only in academic life but for life in Cracow, are the student concerts by soloists,
choir and Academy orchestras under the direction of professionals or student conductors. The concert
repertoire not only of classical masterpieces but also pieces by students of composition. Such planning and
intensive work by young musicians creatively enriches the musical life of the school.
A number of Cracow students take part in national and foreign competitions, international master classes,
summer school workshops. Ensembles work resiliently, specializing in the performance of early music,
classical, romantic and contemporary music, such as the Contemporary Music Ensemble
as directed by Prof. Adam Kaczynski.
Young artists unfold furthermore their own interests in spheres of learning.
Since 1991, the academic journal "Vivo" has been running and in an interesting way comments
on events in school and cultural issues generally.
All forms of students activities constantly broadening the sphere of passions for music, serve to prepare
the young people for self-dependent artistic, scholarly and cultural work.

It is difficult to describe in a few words the colour and varied life of the school. Each, even small event,
each and every day bring essential values to life at the Academy.
B eyond the course of history through the extensive activities of the Academy of Music and through every period of growth
has shone this same objective: The enrichment and dissemination of Polish musical culture.
