History

Microsociological Laboratory was founded in the academic year 1989/90 by Jacek SZMATKA (Ph.D., since 1992 full professor) who had by then been known, first of all, as the author of the monograph Małe struktury społeczne. Wstęp do mikrosocjologii strukturalnej [Small Social Structures. Introduction to Structural Microsociology, Warsaw 1989]. Following few years of intense activities in the field of experimental research and theory development , his small research unit was promoted, as of February 1, 1996, to the rank of a chair and renamed to Chair of Research on Group Processes

In Polish, Zakład Badania Procesów Grupowych. In the English version of the Jagiellonian University website, “zakład” is translated as “department” instead of “chair”. “Zakład” is at the bottom of the JU three level organizational structure with wydział=faculty on top, and instytut=institute, department in the middle. ZBPG is one 10 chairs of the Institute of Sociology, being in turn one of 5 institutes which make up the JU Philosophical Faculty.

In 2000, the team then formed by Professor Szmatka and Tadeusz SOZAŃSKI (Ph.D. in sociology from the Jagiellonian, 1982) was joined by Joanna HEIDTMAN (Ph.D. in sociology from the Jagiellonian, 2000). October 20, 2001 the Chair lost its founder and head: after a long disease Professor Szmatka passed away at the age of 51. The chair came under the supervision of Professor Marian NIEZGODA who is also head of the Chair of Social Research Methodology, and Chairman (dyrektor) of the Institute of Sociology .

Research profile

The team is doing basic research on elementary social interaction processes interaction (exchange, conflict, power, and influence) observed in simple social systems with structure defined as a communication network or status order. Theoretical and empirical investigations include mathematical modeling of these processes and laboratory experiments. Advanced experimental studies of power development in exchange networks became possible when the laboratory was equipped with a local computer network and appropriate software. Recent research, originated by Professor Szmatka and continued by his Ph.D. student Kinga Wysieńska (she received her Ph.D. degree in January 2005, having completed her thesis under advisorship of Professor Niezgoda) focuses on task groups in which status inequality and network structure have a joint effect on power distribution. Experimental tests of status characteristics theory have been replicated by Wysieńska for the first time outside the English-speaking world. Earlier research on conflict networks resulted in a number of papers and conference presentations and the Ph.D. degree for Joanna Heidtman whose current research interests include negotiations and conflict resolution (she's got a M.A degree in psychology). Tadeusz Sozański (M.Sc. in mathematics, 1975) deals with mathematical sociology, mainly applied graph theory and game theory. His monograph The Mathematics of Exchange Networks is going to appear in 2006.

The Lab

The group processes laboratory is currently equipped with a computer network with 6 PCs connected to the server through a hub. The new equipment was purchased in 2000-01 owing to the investment grant obtained by Professor Szmatka from the Polish counterpart of NSF. The network was configured by a specialist from the University of Iowa. The WinSES program, needed to run standard status characteristics experiments, was made available by the University of Iowa and Lisa Troyer, the program author. The lab has benefited very much from the cooperation with the University of South Carolina, begun in 1989 by Jacek Szmatka whose ambition was to create at his university a similar center for experimental research on group processes. Successive versions of the ExNet program, obtained from the American partner, made it possible to replicate experiments on power in networks for the first time outside the U.S. Currently, Exnet III is used, a program written by D. Girard, available by courtesy of David Willer and Sociology Department at the University of South Carolina.

Courses taught

The current teaching offer closely related to the Chair's research profile includes the following courses: Microsociology and group processes (T. Sozański, J. Heidtman), Social psychology (J. Heidtman), Game and decision theory (T. Sozański), Theory and Experimental Research on Exchange Networks (T. Sozański), Tactics, negotiations, strategies (J. Heidtman). In addition, T. Sozański has taught for many years courses in methodology of social research and statistics.
